Chapter Twelve

“Did I hear you moaning in there?” Genna teased after Fraser left.

“Like I told you, he really is good with his hands.”

Genna squealed and bounced on the couch. “You are so wicked. I love it!”

“You told me to have a little fun. That’s what I’m doing.” After every conversation she had with Fraser recently, however, she had begun to think maybe there was something between them. He wasn’t the simple-minded boy who was only after one thing. But she shook her head. He was still dangerous. Love was dangerous. Fun wasn’t.

“Sometimes I think having fun would be easier.”

Something was troubling Genna, and it was pretty obvious. “What is it?”

“Jeff is upset with me. I think…I think we’re going to break up.”

“Why?”

“He said he feels like I’m distant, that all I talk about is little things that don’t matter.” Tears dropped down her cheeks. “And I know why.”

“Because you never told him.”

Genna nodded.

She took her friend’s hand. “You should tell him, Genna. He loves you. He won’t betray that by telling anyone.”

“How can we know that? What if we do break up one day for other reasons, and he gets resentful? It’s not safe.”

Genna was right, and Nicole knew it. Telling anyone, especially a guy, was not safe at all. What happened when Fraser got the A, had his way with her, and was through? They could part on amicable terms, couldn’t they? There was no reason he’d ever tell anyone. Not at all. At least, she hoped. She had been careless in telling him. “You’re right, Genna. I hadn’t considered that…” Her voice felt thick in her throat.

Genna wiped her cheeks and studied her. “Nikki, have you told someone?”

“Yes,” she whispered.

“Who?”

Nicole only gave her a hopeless look.

“Oh, damn it, Nikki, don’t tell me you told Fraser.”

“I…I didn’t know what I was doing.” Nicole squeezed Genna’s hand. “I’m sorry. I know we promised not to tell anyone.”

Genna lowered her head, breaking eye contact and drawing her hand away. “Of all people, Fraser Tillman, Nicole.”

“I’m sorry,” she repeated.

“You two aren’t even dating. You said as much.”

“But he’s my friend,” she insisted. “He wouldn’t say anything.”

“How can you know that?” Genna jumped up angrily. “How could you be so stupid, Nikki? You lovesick idiot!”

“Lovesick? Genna, I feel alone. It has nothing to do with how I feel about him or anyone else. It was stupid, yes. But I did it because I’m just so tired of hiding and feeling terrible about myself. Do you know what Bobby said to me the other day? He said I act like I’m too good for everyone, and that’s why I keep everyone at a distance. He said I’d changed, and I hate that!”

“You think I like it? But I haven’t told anyone, not even Jeff. And then you go off and spill our secret to some guy because he makes you melt. I can’t believe this! I never thought you’d have more trouble keeping our secret. I thought it would be me.”

“I’ve apologized. I’ve said it was stupid.
